Grand Finals is here for UBLs First Foundation comp going on 11 years+! And this time around its some familiar names in the Final game, and some new faces hoping to clinch a title for the non asterix COVID year of 2020!!
Div 1 had a great game on the cards as the Haz Beanz return to the Grand Finals against the defending Champs, the Mudflaps, who ranked 1st in the season after a solid dominance many of the teams this season, Haz Beanz had a late run to the 2nd spot but have been keeping their sights on the playoffs where the veterans activate!
First quarter was the Has Beanz all the way with a quick start from the outside getting 4 threes to land as the time went on to the 2 shots made by Mudflaps, who were faced with a defensive minded Grey team hungry to get up on the shooters and it paid off as Has Beanz took a 16-5 lead but not letting down on their pace knowing that Mudflaps can strike at any moment. most other categories even except assist and steals in the haz beanz favor. This start was not ideal for Mudflaps who has some work to do for the next 3 quarters.
2nd quarter saw the Mudflaps get going a little as they slightly outscored the Has Beanz keeping the game within reach, by the half, Azza had 12 points, Andy k on 4, to Mudflaps W Farrar on 8 and Carlson on 7 as they lit up the midrange with some nice treys. Has Beanz had the clear edge in rebounds as their bigs owned the paint 20-10, and the team game showing through with 7 assits to 2.. both teams shooting about 30% from the field at this point but some ballers were starting to heat up as the 2nd half would commence.
3rd quarter Elliot J came out and hit 2 threes ni a row instantly changing the momentum and shifting the score up for Has Beanz. The Mudflaps continued to make playes through Will and attack the top of the zone to get some buckets and dishes inside. Will hit 2 threes to keep things close and Has Beanz kept at their game letting Azza unleasg from outside and the shooters get good looks whilst the bigs scraped up the rebounds, Mudflaps did well to box out but lost the quarter on points down 16 going into the 4th.
Mudflaps had their last chance to make a run this quarter, the 4th, as they looked to get some threes up and cover the gap that Haz Beenz sat comfortably on most game. Has Beanz were onto them and they locked down the perimeter as they had most game, the Mudflaps weapons had to work for their shots and came up short in the end. Haz Beanz cruised to a win and took down the defending champs with a great display of teams basketball and gritty defence!
Haz Beanz returns to the winners circle and claims another title to add to its prestigious run throughout the years, although the team has changed a bit, the Core pieces and style of play has remained a tried and true championship recipe. Well Done has Beanz! And a grerat season for Mudflaps, a great opponent and great squad of guys who were humbled this game, but don’t count them out, they look to take it back next season!
Big mentions to the top performers from the box score, from the Haz Beanz, Azza P goes hard in a Finals MVP performance getting 23 points 5 steals to lead the offensive and defense effort of the Haz Beanz, the Haz Beanz have had this player in their franchise since day 1 and has become an offensive powerhouse putting in big games this season culminating to this one game where he took the challenge and got the Chip, Elliot J on 10 points, and Joe P on 9 hitting 3 threes in true veteran style as he slowly passes the torch to Azza as the PUljics dominate UBLs upper divisions. Noah a big season in the paint and this game grabbed a Rodman-esque 16rebs!
Top players from Mudflaps were Will Farrar on 20points 8rebounds, leading the team with his skills at the 1 –spot getting the most out of his squad this time, Todd R also put in some of his trademark wing 3s to get 10 points 3 rebs, and Captain Carlson got busy on 7 points as they took the 2nd spot this season to a great crew of Ballers, their rivals, Haz Beanz…
Div2 had the best 2 teams face off in a 48 minute hectic flurry of huge defensive plays and smooth offensive moves which showed why these two teams made it to the game. Rattlesnakes come in just after COVID break and have been going on great runs and just got the basketball gods on side scraping thru the Semis.
Gongstar are the established team in the Div going to many past finals and playing well through out the season, they make it to he final dance again, and try their luck beating the feisty crew from Towaradgi…
First quarter of the game we had the Gongstars come out with a hungy unmatched to this point of the game, with the guards getting some nice shots to fall and the bigs getting their way with the paint defenders. Michael for Gongstars came out strong and got 7 points on the quarter on 60% shooting, Alex P starting this game strong with 6 rebounds already with his 4 points. Rattlesnakes went tot he line a couple of times but couldn’t hit the bonus shots to help the small gap which stood at 6 at the end fo the 1st quarter siren…Gongstars experience getting the advantage this quarter. Field goal percentage was 50% Gongstar and 29% Rattlenakes, theyd have to turn it around to keep the game in reach! Gongstar win the quarter 19-13
2nd Quarter saw the lead get a bit biger for the Gongstar crew as they kept pushing hte basll inside on drives and geting it to their big man who drew fouls and found the spots to be effective. But both teams weren’t hitting their free throws and Gongstar just had a little more luck with the ball going in thatn Rattlesnakes who were shooting just above 30% imporoving slightly, the turnovers were mounting though with 4 more than Gongstar. 2nd half would need a big run from Rattlenakes as the Gongstar crew led by 12 at the halftime break.
3rd quarter action took up a notch as the run that we had been waiting for is here! Rattlesnakes mjust have had some of Michael Jordans SpaceJam special Gatorade as they came out like maniacs with the crowd behind them causing a ruckus, the went on a 23- 5 run with some big points by Jack S sparking some passion, and Drew P put in the buzzer beating 3 to twist the knife into Gongstar who needed to step it up and look for other angles in the 4th, being down 7 points after the Rattlesnakes run.
4th quarter we saw the same momentum from Rattlenakes that they used to hammer the points on the board in the 3rd quarter, the groove from the guards flowing into the rest of the team as they continued to get out on the break and put in some easy points. Big time defensive stops and boards from Rattlesnakes helped them keep the lead and improve a little by sharing the ball and not letting up on loose balls. Gongstars had no answer, with free thows not landing and 3s not going in, they kept looking for extra points but the energy was all with Rattlesnakes and they took out the chip finishing on another run to the tone of 17-9 points. Well done to Gongstars who fought hard but it just wasn’t to be for them this season!
Big shoutouts to the top players in this game, Rattlesnakes had some players go off, MVP performance by Jack C with a great statline and double double of 17 pooints 15 rebounds and 5 assists on 46% shooting, a Jokic-esque game which helped his team out big time to get this one. Whilst on Gongstars, the lead man was Alex P on 15 points 10 rebounds and 2 blocks, a double double not easily achieved with so much attention on him. Michael started strong and notched 9 points and Arjay got 8 points to help out in the heartbreaking loss for the Gongstars!
